Photos from the Cinquo de Mayo weekend

I’ve uploaded 94 pics from my trip to the San Francisco area last weekend. They include:

  • flying down to San Francisco (I got some nice en route shots)
  • Steve and Wendy’s wedding
  • visiting the USS Hornet, the WW2 aircraft carrier that also handled space capsule recovery
  • going to the Phillies v. Giants game

A few highlights:

Not a real Apollo capsule: one of the test units that were used to practice the recovery procedures. Showing us how he guided aircraft in, back in WW2!

Seattle Locks Cruise

We took the Seattle Locks Cruise this morning, starting from the southern end of Lake Union and finishing up at Seattle’s Pier 56. There are a bunch of photographs here in my gallery. Yes, I did snap the “Sleepless In Seattle” floating house, but I think the rest of the pictures more than make up for this momentary lapse.

All in all, a very pleasant way to spend 2 1/2 hours on a summer Sunday morning.

Weekend photography

As requested by Alec, here are a few photographs taken this weekend. Most show the comings and goings of Seattle’s busy port. My (temporary) apartment here in Belltown gives me excellent views southwest, towards the container terminal, and northwest, towards Bainbridge Island.

Three more photo albums

These are mostly for friends and family.

  • Chris has been visiting from California for the last few days. Here are a few characteristic shots….
  • Tommy stayed overnight last Friday while his father celebrated his 30th birthday. We took a few pictures of him playing, reading, bathing, etcetera. (Tommy, that is – not Mark…!)
  • On Monday, Chris, Merry and I visited the Saugus Iron Works, a National Park in which one of the first wrought iron plants in North America has been painstakingly recreated. All those waterwheels, and the machinery that they drive, are in working condition. Here are some still photos; I also captured some video clips which I may upload later.

Enjoy!

Back to the rain (with a bonus)

I’ve just arrived back in the (very wet) Boston area after a remarkably tedious trip from Seattle. The SEA-DEN flight was OK, but for some reason air traffic control imposed a draconian flow control policy into Boston, and the DEN-BOS flight was a couple of hours late. Boring.
The bonus was visual. After taking off from SEA, our 757 had to climb through a fairly thick layer of dense cloud. When we emerged, the top of Mount Ranier was right in front of me. Since I had my camera handy….

Seattle views (with buses)

I’ve got an hour to kill at the Red Carpet Club at SeaTac airport before I fly back to Boston, so I decided to upload a few photos that I took yesterday. I was staying at the Hotel Max; as you can see, it’s very elegant (original art everywhere), but I’m not sure I’d recommend it. The bathrooms are tiny, my shower only had two water temperature settings (painfully hot, and scalding), and they charge extra for WiFi. (This is particularly galling in a city that has more free hotspots than you can count.)

Despite the fact that I’ve visited Seattle many times before, I’d never been up the Space Needle. I decided to rectify this, and took the opportunity to visit Paul Allen’s SciFi Museum (tiny, but promising) and Experience Music Project. EMP was pretty good: lots of stuff about musicians from the Pacific Northwest, from Heart to Nirvana to Pearl Jam. And, of course, Jimi Hendrix. It’s a veritable shrine to the greatest guitarist of all time. (Yes, I’m a believer. I’m not sure why they downplayed his masterpiece “Electric Ladyland”, but never mind.)
The shots from the Space Needle are a bit subdued: while Tuesday and Wedenesday were sunny, Thursday was overcast and showery. I tried to get a good shot of St. Mark’s Cathedral for Chris, but at maximum zoom all my efforts look a bit hazy.

And finally there are some shots of various Seattle buses for Paul.

In the evening, I took the ferry over to Bainbridge Island to have dinner with old friends. I’ll add those photos later. [Done]

Lime Rock photos

I had a great day at Lime Rock yesterday. I’ve posted some of the photos in my gallery; I also shot some video clips which I may post later. After staying overnight at a motel in Lee, I blasted back to Brookline this morning. Traffic was pretty light: for most of the way I set the cruise control to 75 and relaxed (to Amplified Heart by Everything But The Girl), using a little extra right pedal to overtake.
